Letherette remix Elder Island’s ‘Feral’
Friday 11th December - Electronic production duo Letherette bring their own unique twist to the haunting new single from Bristol’s electronic/alt-pop trio Elder Island, ‘Feral’.
Scraping the original track to its bare bones, the Wolverhampton-based duo have latched on to the haunting undercurrent at the track’s core, instilling a sense of fragility and hollow isolation into a melody that now rests near-entirely in vocalist Katy Sargent’s voice. Introducing discordant piano chords and a looming, jarring clap, Letherette are pushing the track’s original themes of somniphobia and anxiety to the forefront, creating a sound that is fully exposed and marvellous to hear.
The Ninja Tune-signed Letherette have previously remixed songs from electronic icon Bonobo, the experimental, folk-orientated Bibio, and pioneering electro-producer Machinedrum.
The remix of ‘Feral’ is another on Elder Island’s growing list of song reworks. From a band with a penchant for interpretation, their acclaimed debut album released last year, ‘The Omnitone Collection’, was remixed in its entirety by a host of artists including Jay Glass Dubs, Matthew Dear and PBR Streetgang, and was released as the full album ‘The Omnitone Collection Remixed’.
Commenting on Letherette’s remix of their track Elder Island said:
"We have been long time listeners of Letherette's music and have always been impressed by how they can flip a track and make it their own.
It’s an honour to have them remix Feral. They've created a whole new groove.”
Elder Island’s ‘Feral’ marks the first taste of new music ahead of their upcoming, as yet unnamed, sophomore album due 2021. Inspired by the fear of falling asleep, known as ‘somniphobia’, the song embraces the paranormal, bringing to life the uncomfortable dread of childhood nightmares, and the baggage they so often carry into adulthood. The band released the track on 12th November which was followed by a striking new music video, reminiscent of a short film in its cinematic approach, on the 19th November.

About Elder Island:
Elder Island are vocalist and cellist Katy Sargent, bassist and beat maestro Luke Thornton and guitarist and synth master David Havard.
Carving out a genre-defying space for themselves in our musical landscape, Elder Island captivate with shapeshifting songs. The trio’s sound cherry-picks and transforms elements from genres as diverse as electronica, indie, pop and neo-soul. The result is a web of sound that threads poetic lyricism and unfamiliar instruments over a backdrop of electronic elements and synth-heavy dance beats.
The release of ‘Feral’ marks their first new music since last year’s acclaimed debut “The Omnitone Collection”, which has seen the band amass a massive 180 million global streams and over 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Elder Island have headlined 60 international shows to date, performing at large capacity venues across the UK and the US including The Roundhouse (London), The Marble Factory (Bristol), Bowery Ballroom (NYC), El Rey Theatre (LA) and The Fillmore (San Francisco). In addition to this, the band appeared in their last performance as special guest headliners alongside Maribou State with support from DJ Seinfeld, Folamour and Quantic at London’s iconic 5000 capacity venue Printworks at the start of 2020.
