18 June, London: Anonymous producer Barton Think is set to release mysterious debut ‘My Last Album’ on 18th June via Time Is The Enemy.
Little is known of Barton Think. Besides hailing from Austin, Texas, details are scarce. Brought to the attention of Time Is The Enemy through friend and collaborator Colonel Red, the label’s intrigue led them to gradually piece together what has become ‘My Last Album’, now ready to be shared with the world. Without a firm idea of the elusive artist’s identity, the only scraps of evidence the label has are a series of short, broken voice messages authorising the album’s release.
What is more certain, however, is Barton Think’s ear for a melody. A vibrant and infectious LP, ‘My Last Album’ finds the puzzling artist pulling together sprawling strands of soul, hip hop, jazz, electronic, broken beat and trip hop and deftly blending them together to create something at the same time evocative of the past and contemporary, always beautiful. Despite the vast array of influences and contributors on show, all thirteen tracks feel remarkably cohesive throughout.
Through woozy beats and expansive samples, Barton Think provides the foundation for his collaborators to shine across a genre-shifting journey. It’s quite the supporting cast, as the iconic MC Dynamite, the hypnotic Denitia and plenty of others join for a record which, similar to the intriguing world of Barton Think, feels totally immersive at every step.
Speaking about the unearthing of the album, label Art Director Denis Longhi explains: “We discovered this enigmatic producer from Austin, Texas, through intensive digging and thanks to helpful advice from Colonel Red – an old friend of Jazz:Re:Found and one of the most appreciated voices within funk in the UK. Barton Think’s identity is still unclear, but this bizarre producer has an incredible music knowledge, and unearthing these unreleased gems is certainly an incredible stroke of luck for us at Time is the Enemy."
